Type 2 Diabetes Symptoms

Type 2 diabetes symptoms include increased urination, excessive thirst, unexpected weight loss, hunger, fatigue, irritability and fruity body odor. These symptoms are the result of having high blood glucose levels (uncontrolled diabetes). If you are experiencing these symptoms,  seek medical attention immediately.

1. Increased Urination

Type 2 diabetes symptoms include increased urination as a result of having excess sugar in your blood.  According to The Chemical Statistician, as the urine becomes more concentrated with glucose (sugar), water leaves the bloodstream and diffuses into the urinary system leading to more frequent urination.[1]

2. Excessive Thirst

With that said, it is no surprise that type 2 diabetes symptoms include excessive thirst. Once your body starts dumping sugar and water, you will become dehydrated. Therefore, the thirst center in your brain will stay triggered to remind you to replenish loss fluids. However, without the appropriate hydration, an electrolyte imbalance can occur which can lead to dizziness, confusion, and a disoriented mental state.

3. Weight Loss

Since the body is unable to use its primary source of fuel to energize the body, it will start fueling the body with stored fats. This is the premise of how the keto diet works, therefore, weight loss will occur rapidly. However, diabetic-induced ketosis is harmful to your health because of the excess sugar floating in your bloodstream. Having excessive amounts of sugar in your bloodstream for a prolonged period of time can lead to severe type 2 diabetes complications.

4. Hunger

A person will experienced increased hunger because multiple metabolic processes will be transpiring. All of which requires some form of energy to complete. Food is energy, therefore, you may be hungrier than usual at first. Then, if you continue to go undiagnosed, you may lose your appetite.

5. Fatigue

Fatigue is one of the type 2 diabetes symptoms because your body is working overtime without being able to access its primary fuel source (sugar). Your body will actually start creating new cells to help keep the body supplied with enough energy by means of breaking down your stored fats.

6. Irritability

Irritability is one of the type 2 diabetes symptoms because you will be tired, hungry, and thirsty and basically not feel very well until you get your blood sugars levels under control. In addition, research indicates that high blood sugar levels can alter brain chemistry.

7. Fruity Odor

And last, but not least, having a fruity body odor is a symptom of type 2 diabetes. As sugar enters the urinary tract, the smell of your urine may become sweeter than expected. And your body odor will include a sweet fruity aroma.

8. Acanthosis Nigricans

An early sign of prediabetes is the development of a interesting skin condition called acanthosis nigricans. Acanthosis nigricans is thick dark patchy skin seen in some insulin resistant prediabetics and diabetics. It often appears in the folds or bends of the body. It is most easily seen on the neck or on the face around the mouth. However, it can also appear in the armpit or groin area.

Initially, type 2 diabetes symptoms may be very subtle in the prediabetic stages. Then, once a person actually develops diabetes, the person’s symptoms and bathroom habits may be hard to distinguish from any other day because it has become their new “norm.” Therefore, if you or someone you know have type 2 diabetes symptoms, you should seek medical attention immediately to get a type 2 diabetes test and diagnosis.
