According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 1 in 3 Americans over the age of 18 have prediabetes. People with type 2 diabetes always have prediabetes first. More than 75 percent of people with prediabetes go undiagnosed. A prediabetes diagnosis is your chance to prevent type 2 diabetes.

What Is Prediabetes?

Prediabetes is a serious health condition in which your overall blood sugar or blood glucose level is higher than normal. However, it is currently not high enough for you to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Prediabetes is common in children, teenagers, young adults and older adults. So, what are the early signs of prediabetes?


Early Signs of Prediabetes

One early sign of prediabetes is the development of a skin condition called acanthosis nigricans. It is basically the development of a dark patch of skin on the back of your neck, under your armpit, in your groin area or some other area of the body[1]. This dark patch of skin indicates that you have too much insulin circulating in your blood. Or, in other words, you have developed some insulin resistance. Some people with prediabetes may or may not develop this condition. So, other than this, there may be no early signs of prediabetes. So, instead of looking for signs of prediabetes, let’s take a closer look at the causes of prediabetes.

Causes of Prediabetes

Historically, only people that were overweight were considered to be at a high-risk for getting prediabetes leading to type 2 diabetes. However, being overweight is not the only cause of prediabetes. The main causes of prediabetes include eating a poor diet, not getting enough exercise, and then the combination often leads obesity. With that said, let’s look at some specific risk factor parameters to determine if you are at risk.

Risk Factors

A person that is 45 years old with a body mass index of 25 or greater is at risk of getting prediabetes leading to type 2 diabetes. However, a person younger than 45 with a body mass index of 25 or greater accompanied by high blood pressure, high cholesterol and/or living a less active lifestyle are also at risk. Nevertheless, leaner looking people with an extremely poor diet that live a relatively sedentary lifestyle can be diagnosed with prediabetes.

Prediabetes Tests

There are basically three methods used to test for prediabetes. They are the hemoglobin A1C, fasting blood glucose, and the glucose tolerance test.

  • Hemoglobin A1C (HBA1C)
    • 5.7% – 6.4% (prediabetes range)
  • Fasting Blood Glucose (FBG)
    • 100 – 125 mg/dL (prediabetes)
  • 2-Hour Fasting Glucose Tolerance Test
    • 140 -199 mg/dl (prediabetes)

Prediabetes Prevention

The best prediabetes prevention methods include (1) a healthy low carb diet, (2) adequate exercise, and (3) maintaining a healthy weight. Today, most people eat a diet high in refined sugars, carbohydrates, and unhealthy fats. Then too, many of us live a mostly sedentary lifestyle with limited exercise.
