Best Time To Go To Israel

If you are trying to decide when to go to Israel, the best time to go to Israel is during the spring and fall months of April, May, and October. Israel is positioned between the Mediterranean Sea, the Sea of Galilee, the Red Sea, and the Dead Sea. Therefore, the weather in Israel varies based on the region’s land elevation and distance from the sea.

While Israel’s weather is not as diverse as the Israeli Food Cuisine, this New Jersey-sized country has weather that does vary quite a bit geographically. At times, it is quite possible for you to go snorkeling in Southern Israel and then drive a couple of hours to go skiing in Northern Israel. Therefore, the country of Israel is a year-round vacation destination. In most places, it is mostly warm with clear skies throughout the year.

When to go to Israel…

Summers in Israel are long and hot. Therefore, the temperature can be more comfortable for walking and touring Israel during the spring and fall. Meanwhile, the winter is cold, wet, and there is sometimes snow. With that said – the best time to go to Israel will depend on what you intend to do in Israel and where you intend to go.

Spring & Fall (March – June, September – December)

For some, the best time to go to Israel will be the spring and fall months as winter comes to an end or begins. With the welcomed change in weather comes many concerts, festivals, and art exhibits in Israel.

Others, find this to be a great time to walk the many beautiful hiking trails that are located in Israel and observe the regional culture and architecture. Nevertheless, the weather may be cold at night, so bring a light jacket and waterproof walking shoes.

During March/April the Jewish Passover is a big holiday celebration in Israel. In the months of September/October, the Jewish Rosh HaShana is another big holiday time in Israel that leads up to Yom Kippur.  Everything comes to a halt in Israel during Yom Kippur.

Summer (June – September)

The summer is the best time to visit Israel if you want stay in a beach resort in Tel Aviv or float in the Dead Sea. During the summer, it may be too hot to lay out on the beach during the day. Most visitors arrive around 4 p.m. when the sun is tolerable and the water starts warming up. Since the days are longer, it will give you plenty of time to relax at the beach after a day of touring museums and other parts of Israel.

Winter (December – March)

Winter is the best time to visit Israel if you enjoy the cold air that winter often brings. However, keep in mind that the days will be shorter during this time of year. During the month of December, Israel will likely be crowded with an array of visitors arriving for various religious celebrations and festivals. However, January and February can provide some lower airfares, hotel accommodations, and tours.

–Inland Areas–

Winter is fairly mild in the inland areas of Israel, so even if it is not necessarily the best time to go Israel, the winter weather in Israel is usually tolerable. However, in areas were the altitude is above 2,000 feet Russian air masses can at times send snow to Israel even in January, February, and March.

  • Jerusalem, about 2,300 feet above sea level
  • Bethlehem, about 2,600 feet above sea level
  • Nazareth,  about 1,000- 1,600 feet above sea level.

In summer months, the air is often dry and more tolerable in the inland regions. However, you may occasionally have to deal with masses of hot air and wind coming in from the Egyptian desert. Therefore, at times, the sun can be a bit of a scorcher even in the inland areas.


As long as you are familiar with Israeli customs, traditions, foods, and celebrations, the best time to go to Israel is really up to you.   As stated, when to go to Israel really depends on where you intend to go and do.
