Low carb diet – what to avoid! Hello to all, but especially to new low carb diet eaters! If you started following the Low Carb Diet Life a while ago, you know two things about me.
One – I recommend that you learn what you can eat on a low carb diet instead of focusing on what to avoid. And two – I recommend that you start a low carb diet by switching to low carb diet drinks first. An third – start substituting high carb snacks with low carb snacks. If you did not know this before today, you may now understand the progression of our content better.

Even though I prefer not to focus on the low carb diet “what to avoid” aspect, it is good to know when you are starting a low carb diet. So, here is a list of things you should avoid on a low carb diet.
#1 Honey, Nectar, Syrup, and Sugar
Sugar is pure carbs! Therefore, when you are thinking – “low carb diet, what to avoid?” sugar is the number one thing to avoid. Honey, nectar, and syrup are essentially pure sugar also, but with a some additional health benefits. Unfortunately, some sugars are disguised on the label under titles like fructose, sucrose, and lactose. Lactose is a sugar found only in dairy milk.
Alternatives: Low Carb Sugar Substitute, Unsweetened Nut Milks
#2 Beans, Pastas, Breads, Grains, Potatoes, and Rice
Beans, pastas, breads, grains, potatoes, and rice are all carbohydrates. Therefore, they must be avoided on most low carb diet plans. These foods are often white, yellow, or light brown in color. However, there are some pretty amazing alternatives available. So, I will give you a small glimpse.
#3 Alcohol, Fruit Juice, Dairy Milk, and Liqueurs
Alcohol, fruit juice, dairy milk and sweet liqueurs are high in carbs. However, there are some low carb alcohols and sugar-free coffee liqueurs available. Unsweetened nut milks are low carb, delicious, and lactose free.
#4 Sugary Fruits
Most fruits are really high in natural sugar, but they are full of vitamins and minerals. I like to think of them as natures candy. Low carb fruits can be enjoyed in moderation. Therefore, I endeavor to eat some low carb fruit at least once or twice a week. Since I am more interested in the health benefits of being on a low carb diet, I occasionally use unsweetened apple sauce or a small banana to naturally sweeten low carb cookies and breads.
#5 Sweet Nuts
Some nuts are lower in carbs than others. The cashew is probably one of the sweetest. Therefore, low carb nuts should be enjoyed in moderation. Honey-roasted and other candy-coated nuts are a no-no. Click here to view low carb nut nutrition.

#6 Starchy Vegetables
Most starchy vegetables are lighter in color like corn, carrots, sweet potato, and regular potato. So, when in doubt, stick with a dark green leafy vegetable because they are generally low carb. Even some light green vegetables are relatively sweet like sweet peas. Moderation is key because they too can significantly contribute to your overall daily calorie requirements for your carbs.

#7 Certain Meats (Protein)
Since a low carb diet will require for you to eat more meat (protein), you should concentrate on eating primarily healthy, lean, and unprocessed meats. So, highly-processed deli and lunch meats should not be your primary source of protein. Then too, dried meats should not be your main snack. These things are far less health that fresh cooked meats and they are typically full of sodium. Do not get me wrong – I totally enjoy lunch meats and deli meats on the occasional low carb salads, low carb wraps, and some low carb pizza, but do not make this your primary choice for protein.
#8 Unhealthy Oils (Fat)
On a low carb diet, you will also need to eat more fat. However, most of your fats should be healthy fats! Some fish provide healthy omega-3 fatty acids. But most fatty meats are full of bad cholesterol. Unless you have fried it yourself, most fried foods will have unhealthy fats and wrapped in a carb (ie. flour, cornmeal, etc.). On the other hand, fatty fruits like avocados, olives, and different low carb “nuts” are excellent fats to include in your low carb diet. You will discover that some fruit, vegetable, and nut oils are quite healthy! Some will cause you to lose weight (organic unrefined coconut oil).
