Low Carb Munchies – What to Eat?

Low carb munchies are common when you first start a low carb diet. However, I can assure you that they do not last for long! You simply have to learn what you can eat on a low carb diet. Then, there will be no reason for you to be hungry. On a low carb diet, you can eat until you are content  – as long as you munch on low carb foods.

After many years of yo-yo dieting, I discovered that a low carb diet is the best way to lose weight and keep it off. And the main reason is because I can eat until I am content. And then, when I feel hungry again, I eat until I am content again! On a really active day, I may be eating all day long (about every hour and a half). Nevertheless, when eating a low carb diet, I am still able to lose or maintain my weight.

With other diets, I would be hungry while watching the clock to see when it was “time” to eat a meal or a snack. Then eventually, I would ditch the diet because I would get sick of being hungry all the time. And ultimately, I’d celebrate ditching the diet by eating! So of course, I would gain the weight back and at times more. This is not the case with a low carb diet! When you are hungry – eat! Just eat a combination of the right things. If you are active, eat fattier low carb snacks or meals to remedy low carb munchies. Otherwise, find low carb, low fat snacks or meals to eat throughout the day.

So, let me help you deal with your low carb munchies. At times, we think that we are craving our “favorite” this, that, or the other. However, you may discover that sometimes you are actually just missing the texture-taste combo of a certain food.

For example, years ago (before a low carb diet became so popular) I missed eating potato chips. However, I soon realized that a crunchy, salted raw cabbage salad with seasoned ground turkey meat did the trick for me. This combination took care of my “potato chip” craving. So apparently, I was just missing something salty that had a bit of crunchiness.

Before you panic, things in the low carb diet world have gotten much better! There are low carb snacks galore and they have gotten much more convenient for active low carbers. Therefore, you have no reason to have low carb munchies. So, here is a quick run-down of what to eat depending on what you have a taste for. Your low carb munchies can be satisfied with something (1) sweet, (2) salty and crunchy, (3) cold and creamy, or (4) fatty and filling.

1. Sweet

Low Carb Fruit – Eating low carb fruit is a great way to deal with low carb munchies. With low carb fruit you get something sweet along with other benefits. You get natural vitamins, minerals, and fiber to help you get energized and feel full longer. Place an online grocery order for some low carb fall fruits in season.

Lily’s Dark Chocolate – If you are new to the blog, eating chocolate on a low carb diet plan may seem out of the realm of possibilities. However, once you learn the health benefits of eating dark chocolate, you may change your perspective. Lily’s Dark Chocolate is a excellent option for getting rid of your low carb munchies, especially if/when you are hormonal. This is a stevia-sweetened candy bar with no added sugar.  I have written a complete Lily’s Chocolate review.

Chocolove XoXo – The Chocolove dark chocolate candy bar is just the right size for you to indulge yourself on a low carb diet. The recommended dark chocolate candy bar does have some sugar. However, its carb count is comparable to the no-sugar added Lily’s Dark Chocolate Bar.

Sensibly Sweet Hot Chocolate – The sensibly sweet light hot chocolate mix is the best low carb hot chocolate drink mix that I have found in a box. It is both creamy and chocolatey with just enough sugar. The K-cups have 5 grams of carbs while the box with envelopes have only 4 grams of carbs. 2. Salty & Crunchy

Pork Rinds – Pork skins are the official low carb potato chip when you are on a strict low carb diet. They have zero carbs! If you are new to eating pork skins – they are not all the same. These are the best tasting low carb pork skins that I have found.

Cello Whisps – Cello Whisps can also help satisfy your low carb munchies. They are best suited for when you have a taste for something cheesy, salty, and crunchy. They come in a variety of different flavors including, but certainly not limited to, Parmesan, Bacon BBQ, and Tomato Basil.  However, you can also peruse our low carb cheese page.

Pickles – Pickles are a quick an easy way to get rid of low carb munchies. As a low carb, low fat food, pickles are a great snack for people that are more sedentary. However, as a salty snack, they are also good for active low carbers that may sweat during a light workout or in the summer heat.

Stovetop Popcorn – Popcorn is actually a starch. Therefore, portion control is the key to enjoying the occasional small bowl of popcorn. You can find an easy stovetop popcorn recipe in an earlier post.

3. Cold & Creamy

Greek Yogurt – Low carb Greek yogurt can successfully remedy your low carb munchies. However, check the label to make sure you grab a low carb Greek yogurt (less than 10 g carbs). I buy the Dannon Light & Fit Brand. You can order them online if you must, but you can typically get them when you place your local online grocery delivery order.

Cottage Cheese – This is another one of my favorite low carb munchies solutions. It is a dairy products, so it will have a natural milk sugar called lactose. However, you can enjoy the full fat, low fat, or fat free version depending on your low carb diet needs.

Whey Protein Shake – I mix my strawberry or chocolate whey protein shake with cold unsweetened coconut or almond milk. To avoid clumping, mix the powder well with a small amount of room temperature water before adding cold milk.

4. Fatty & Filling

Salami, Cheese, and Crackers – This is my latest favorite low carb meal or low carb snack. It is a low carb, high fat and high protein meal combo. Therefore, if you are an active low carber, this is an excellent low carb lunch or meal idea! It is calorie rich and very filling. So, if you are more sedentary, do not munch out on this all day. You should stick with low carb, low fat snacks and meals. This recipe is currently available in our  SIMPLE Low Carb Magazine (Fall 2018).

Nuts –  Low carb nuts are my all-time favorite “go-to” snack. They are nourishing healthy snacks and can therefore satisfy your low carb munchies quickly. Some of my favorite low carb nuts are almonds, pistachios, and lightly salted peanuts that come in convenient on-the-go packets. 

Deviled Eggs – Eggs are very filling and therefore a great remedy when you have the low carb munchies. Here you can find a tasty low carb deviled-egg recipe.

Avocados – This low carb fruit does not have any cholesterol, but instead is high in healthy fat. It is also high in potassium and low in sodium, so it makes a great low carb low sodium snack. So, this is something healthy and fatty for you to get rid of your low carb munchies.

Spring Roll Wraps – There are a variety of low carb wrap recipes that can quickly kill your low carb munchies.


As you can see, there is no reason to have a case of the low carb munchies! When you get hungry, eat until you are satisfied. If you are an active low carber, you may prefer high protein, higher fat low carb meals. On the other hand, if you are not very active, low fat, low carb meals are a better option for losing weight and keeping it off. The concludes my suggestions for low carb munchies.
