Low Carb Hot Cocoa Recipe
This is a healthy low carb hot cocoa recipe. I usually just use a low carb hot chocolate drink mix. However, after discovering the health benefits of chocolate, I decided to come up with my own healthy low carb hot cocoa recipe.
I will likely experiment with more low carb hot chocolate recipes this fall and winter. But for now, this is a simple starter recipe.
I used an unsweetened coconut milk, therefore this cup of cocoa has a smooth non-chalky taste. Then, I added a special dark blend of natural and dutch blend of 100% cacao. Next, I added a vanilla extract to bring it all together by enhancing the aroma and taste. And finally, I added a little xylitol to add a bit more sweetness.
So, that’s it! You can give this recipe a try and let me know what you think in a comment below.
Serving Size: 1 Large Cup
Prep Time: 5 Minutes
Nutrition: 105 Calories, 4 g Fat, 5 g Carbs, < 1 g Protein
2 c. Unsweetened Coconut Milk
1 Tbsp. 100% Cacao (I used this kind.)
1/2 Tsp. Vanilla Extract
1/2 Tsp. Xylitol Sugar-Free Sweetener (I used this one.)
- Add unsweetened coconut milk to a microwave safe dish.
- Microwave on high for 2 – 3 minutes until hot.
- Place cacao powder in a large coffee cup.
- Slowly pour the hot milk over the cacao powder.
- Whisk or stir until well-blended.
- Add vanilla extract. Stir.
- Add xylitol to add more taste.
- Or, top with a few marshmallows (if you must).
When mixing the cacao and hot milk, pour the milk over the powder. In this way, you can avoid having clumps of cocoa floating in your drink. Otherwise, if you pour the powder into the milk you may get aggravated trying to stir away the clumps.
If you forget, simply heat the milk until it get hot enough to dissolve the clumps. In the event this happens, be sure to let it cool down a bit before you drink it.
Adding marshmallows to this low carb hot cocoa recipe will increase the number of carbs. Therefore, omit them from this low carb hot cocoa recipe if you can.
